How to check your moles and the factors that could put you at risk of skin cancer

Updated: May 22, 2018

Dermatology specialist Dr Kirsty Lau explains how a monthly 10-minute self-check, using a ruler, full-length mirror, hand mirror and smartphone can prevent avoidable illnesses.

1. Start at the top of your body, by massaging your scalp to check for any raised areas. Divide your hair and use your phone camera to identify anything new.

2. Work your way down your body, using the two mirrors to reach any difficult-to-see areas, such as your upper arms, back of your legs and buttocks.

3. Finish by using a seat to check your genitals, legs and feet. Don’t forget to check your heels, soles and underneath the toenails – it’s easy to forget these areas.
